Awesome Anything is now FIVEFOOTWAY

A year ago, Awesome Anything was founded as a multidisciplinary design studio to make things for the art and architecture industry, social enterprises and communities. Within that period, we have had some great experiences while working on a range of projects including developing a graphic identity for an urban art programme, branding a design-centric engineering firm and producing our very own magazine about asian cities, FIVEFOOTWAY. Today, I write to you to share news about the future of this studio.

Come May 1st, Awesome Anything will be rebranded as the design and research consultancy arm of FIVEFOOTWAY. Working with brands and organizations, this new studio will operate beyond the traditional boundaries of architecture including media, technology, cultural studies, graphic design, curating and publishing to explore the past, present and future city. You can find out more about what we do at FIVEFOOTWAY.com/studio

Thank you for your support since the beginning and I hope to have your continued support in this next chapter of the studio.

An interview with I-S magazine

I-S Magazine recently ran an interview with the boss about our sister publication, FIVEFOOTWAY, his opinions about the city and bits of his life. Here are some quotable quotes:

As a student, I wanted to read an intelligent yet accessible magazine about Asian architecture.. I couldn’t find it, so I decided to make it.”

“The value of FIVEFOOTWAY is in its editorial voice. We look at the city through very unique lenses and only publish our own stories.”

YAL Mash-up 2: Startup Stories

At some point, some of us might have thought about starting up our own design firm. Maybe it’s the draw of independence & freedom, or maybe we just needed a new adventure.

However, the journey of the start-up is filled with unknowns and if only, there was someone who could show the path.

In this edition of the YAL Mash-up (by the Young Architectural League or YAL), we try to do a little bit of that by bringing 3 personalities, Belinda Huang of ARC Studio, Mark Wee of Ong&Ong and a fresh young-ish talent, Ewan, all of whom have taken the leap of faith and now share their journeys with all of us. Adib (AA’s founder) who is also part of the YAL committee and co-organiser of this event will be there to moderate the discussion together with Joshua Teo of Re:Act.

Happening at 7pm onwards at Emily Hill on 24th Feb 2011. Free. More details here at the FB event page. If you’re free, do pop over and say hi.

P.S. Yup, we designed that poster.

FIVEFOOTWAY at the Young Writers Media Festival

Awesome Anything’s Adib Jalal and FIVEFOOTWAY partner-in-crime, Justin Zhuang of In Plain Words will be conducting a workshop for the Young Writers Media Festival on 18th & 19th Feb.

Featuring a slew of workshops and talks about writing & publishing, the festival targets Singaporean students from Secondary 4 (age 16 and above), Junior College, ITE, Polytechnic or those enrolled in any tertiary institution with writing aspirations.

Titled “‘5 Wives & 1 Husband”, our workshop will specifically explore online publishing and will see Justin giving a short presentation/lecture about the nuances of online writing/publishing before Adib takes the participants through a 1-hr activity to further discover and practice some of these ideas.

Hope to see you there.

The league of young architects

A couple of years ago, the Singapore Institute of Architects initiated the Young Architectural League (YAL) as a platform to engage and nurture the younger architectural community in Singapore. Through various programmes and events for both young professionals and students, YAL hopes to nurture a community of future architects who believe in sharing, collaborating and through it, help new ideas take flight.

Not too long ago, Awesome Anything’s founder, Adib Jalal, was approached to be a part of the committee behind YAL and we are pleased to share that he now joins other passionate people such as Frven Lim of Surbana, Mark Wee of Ong & Ong & Joshua Teo of Re:Act in helping to craft new programmes for the next generation of architects.

More at YAL’s facebook page.

Awesome Anything helped to design the YAL logo. We figured that with a name that has the word “League” in it,  a contemporary coat of arms was in order.
